A 43-year-old man was seriously injured when the car he was a passenger in collided with a ditch. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver received minor injuries and a second woman was uninjured.3. #SINN FÉIN The second day of the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis gets underway today, and party leader Gerry Adams is to deliver an address at the event. Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has called for the British Secretary of State to set a date for a Border Poll on Irish unity. Motions to be discussed today include ones on justice, education, health and the economy.4. #FIANNA FÁIL Is Galway West TD Noel Grealish joining Fianna Fáil? The party has denied that senior figures have approached the independent TD, but Grealish told TheJournal.ie that he would be making no comment on the issue. Talk of the former PD joining Fianna Fáil arose out of a recent report in the Connacht Tribune on the issue.5. #BILL CULLEN Bill Cullen and partner Jackie Lavin are said to be “devastated” that they have lost a High Court bid to continue running Muckross Park Hotel, the Irish Independent reports. They have been running the five-star hotel for the past 20 years. Mr Justice Charleton said that he was refusing the examinership petition “with regret”.6. #JOYCE The grandson of James Joyce, Stephen James Joyce, has described an error in a Joyce quotation on a commemorative coin as “an insult”. He told the Irish Times that it was an insult to the Joyce family and also expressed concerns about the image of his grandfather on the coin.7. #NORTH KOREA US Secretary of State John Kerry has met top officials of North Korea’s key ally and aid provider China to press them to rein in Pyongyang, seeking Beijing’s help to defuse nuclear tensions. He met first with China’s foreign minister Wang Yi after flying in from talks in South Korea with President Park Geun-Hye.8. #BIRD FLU The first human case of H7N9 bird flu has been found in a seven-year-old girl in Beijing, local authorities said. The girl’s parents are poultry traders. She is said to be in a stable condition in hospital, and her parents are in quarantine.9. #SCHOOLS Education Minister Ruairí Quinn has questioned the amount of time that is devoted to religion in primary schools, the Irish Times reports. He made the comment at the AGM of the Catholic Primary Schools Management Association yesterday. He has called for a public debate on the issue.last_img
