Virginia was followed by Hawaii (7.6 percent), Alaska (5.5 percent), Maryland (5.2 percent) and Alabama (5.2 percent) in the ranking of states by defense spending as a portion of their economies. On average, defense spending accounted for 2.2 percent of all states’ GDP in FY 2016. Virginia also ranked highly in absolute terms for attracting defense dollars, coming in second, with $42.7 billion, behind California, at $48.8 billion; Texas came in third for total defense spending with $33.3 billion.Almost 60 percent of total defense spending, $378.5 billion, went to 10 states.Those rankings are included in the latest analysis of defense spending by state prepared by the Office of Economic Adjustment. By highlighting states’ reliance on military installations and contractors, the report can be used “to assess potential exposure to fluctuations in defense spending and to target assistance to create more resilient communities and companies,” according to its executive summary. The Moto G7, Moto G7 Plus, Moto G7 Power and Moto G7 Play are all variations on a theme. From there, the phones take on subtle differences. The most well rounded of Moto’s new G7s for the US, this looks and feels more luxe than you’d expect for a $300 (£239) device. There’s glass on the front and back, a small teardrop-shaped notch and ultrathin bezels all around. Those slimmer margins mean the 6.2-inch display feels expansive without the phone being a behemoth. The dual 12-megapixel/5-megapixel camera setup makes depth-sensing portrait photos possible using that second lens (the G7 Power and play have that too, using software only). You also get the same “auto smile capture” mode as the G7 Plus, for both sets of lenses. An 1.8GHz octacore Snapdragon 632 chipset helps keep tasks moving along, so everything felt zippy in the brief time I had with the phone. As a bonus, there’s water resistance up to IP154 and 64GB of onboard storage to fill up with your photos, videos and apps. The G7 Power’s 5,000mAh battery promises over two days of battery life. Sarah Tew/CNET Moto G7 Power: The battery beast ($249) The name says it all. The Moto G7 Power’s 5,000-mAh battery takes center stage on this device, promising 2.5 days of battery life on a single charge. TurboPower charging means you can effectively top up the battery to give you 9 additional hours of use in just 15 minutes of charge. It’ll cost £179 in the UK. The splashproof G7 Power has a wide eyebrow-style notch on its 6.2-inch screen, but you can tell by holding it that the body is more rudimentary than the Moto G7. A finish that Motorola calls “glass polymer” looks like glass, but is really made out of plastic. Hey, on the plus side, it’ll be harder to break. From a camera perspective, the Moto G7 Power has a single 12-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing shooter. Portrait-style photos that blur the background are a go, but the phone uses software, rather than two lenses, to achieve the effect. It may be the cheapest of the G7 phones, but the Moto G7 Play has a 13-megapixel camera and a fingerprint reader all the same. Sarah Tew/CNET Moto G7 Play: The biggest cost saver ($199) The smallest and most compact Moto G7, the G7 Play was designed to bring you the essentials at a reasonable rate. There’s nothing fancy or noteworthy here, but Motorola still manages to slot in specs that suggest decent performance for the value buy, on paper at least. We won’t know for sure until we get a chance to review the phones. This G7 Play has a 5.7-inch screen (with a wide notch), a splashproof, plastic body with a soft-touch grip, a 13-megapixel rear camera and a decent 3,000-mAh battery. Like the G7 and G7 Power, the modest G7 Play still comes with Android 9 Pie, a headset jack and rear fingerprint reader, and a Snapdragon 632 chipset. That processor alone makes the G7 Play 110 percent faster than the G6 Play, according to Motorola’s claims. It’ll be £149 in the UK. It comes with a more humble 32GB of baked-in storage and just 2GB of RAM. This isn’t a phone meant for intensive gaming or lightning-quick photo processing. But rest assured that you’ll be able to store up to 256GB more files than the phone comes with, thanks to the expandable storage slot on every Moto G7 phone. Moto G7 Plus: The budget ‘splurge’ (£269) The £269 G7 Plus won’t make it to the US, but the most advanced of Motorola’s G7 crop holds the most on-paper appeal. It shares many of the Moto G7’s core specs, like a 6.2-inch FHD+ screen, teardrop notch and Gorilla Glass backing. But it also adds a huge camera upgrade — a 16-megapixel/5-megapixel dual camera setup with optical image stabilization (OIS) — and a 12-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies. It also has a more powerful processor — Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 instead of Snapdragon 632 — and is water resistant at a rating of IP54 (protected from limited dust and spraying water from any direction). Extras include red and indigo colors, stereo speakers tuned by Dolby and the fastest Turbo Power charging, which gets you 12 hours of juice in 15 minutes. The G7 Plus includes high-resolution zoom (all the G7s do), and an “auto smile capture” mode for the rear and selfie cameras, which will automatically take a photo with up to five people in the frame, once everyone smiles and stops moving around. Even a company as committed to the internal-combustion engine as Ferrari can see the writing on the wall, and we’re about to see a big shift in the company’s offerings as we enter the next decade.Ferrari’s next-generation hybrid will be unveiled this year, Automotive News reports, citing comments made by Ferrari CEO Louis Camilleri during its latest quarterly earnings call. It won’t debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, but rather at a different event later in the year. It’ll make its way to buyers in early 2020.The unnamed hybrid supercar will sport the automaker’s second-generation hybrid system. The first generation found use in Formula One, in addition to Ferrari’s own LaFerrari hybrid hypercar. Unlike the V12-toting LaFerrari, though, this new car will reportedly make do with a V8, and it’s believed to make more power than the 710-horsepower 488 Pista. Furthermore, Ferrari’s CEO said on the call that 60 percent of the automaker’s lineup will carry hybrid variants by 2022.2022 is going to be a very important turning point for Ferrari. Not only will it offer a number of hybrids at that point, it’ll be the earliest point at which Ferrari unveils its first battery-electric supercar. Camilleri didn’t commit to any specific date, saying only that it would arrive after 2022.But Ferrari isn’t done with standalone internal-combustion cars by any measure. Two limited-edition models, the Monza SP1 and SP2, will start reaching customers in the fourth quarter of 2019. Introduced by Apple, CoreML is a machine learning framework that powers the iOS app developers to integrate machine learning technology into their apps. It supports natural language processing (NLP), image analysis, and various other conventional models to provide a top-notch on-device performance with minimal memory footprint and power consumption. This article is an extract taken from the book Machine Learning with Core ML written by Joshua Newnham. In this article, you will get to know the basics of what CoreML is and its typical workflow. With the release of iOS 11 and Core ML, performing inference is just a matter of a few lines of code. Prior to iOS 11, inference was possible, but it required some work to take a pre-trained model and port it across using an existing framework such as Accelerate or metal performance shaders (MPSes). Accelerate and MPSes are still used under the hood by Core ML, but Core ML takes care of deciding which underlying framework your model should use (Accelerate using the CPU for memory-heavy tasks and MPSes using the GPU for compute-heavy tasks). It also takes care of abstracting a lot of the details away; this layer of abstraction is shown in the following diagram: There are additional layers too; iOS 11 has introduced and extended domain-specific layers that further abstract a lot of the common tasks you may use when working with image and text data, such as face detection, object tracking, language translation, and named entity recognition (NER). These domain-specific layers are encapsulated in the Vision and natural language processing (NLP) frameworks; we won’t be going into any details of these frameworks here, but you will get a chance to use them in later chapters: It’s worth noting that these layers are not mutually exclusive and it is common to find yourself using them together, especially the domain-specific frameworks that provide useful preprocessing methods we can use to prepare our data before sending to a Core ML model. So what exactly is Core ML? You can think of Core ML as a suite of tools used to facilitate the process of bringing ML models to iOS and wrapping them in a standard interface so that you can easily access and make use of them in your code. Let’s now take a closer look at the typical workflow when working with Core ML. CoreML Workflow As described previously, the two main tasks of a ML workflow consist of training and inference. Training involves obtaining and preparing the data, defining the model, and then the real training. Once your model has achieved satisfactory results during training and is able to perform adequate predictions (including on data it hasn’t seen before), your model can then be deployed and used for inference using data outside of the training set. Core ML provides a suite of tools to facilitate getting a trained model into iOS, one being the Python packaged released called Core ML Tools; it is used to take a model (consisting of the architecture and weights) from one of the many popular packages and exporting a .mlmodel file, which can then be imported into your Xcode project. Once imported, Xcode will generate an interface for the model, making it easily accessible via code you are familiar with. Finally, when you build your app, the model is further optimized and packaged up within your application. A summary of the process of generating the model is shown in the following diagram: The previous diagram illustrates the process of creating the .mlmodel;, either using an existing model from one of the supported frameworks, or by training it from scratch. Core ML Tools supports most of the frameworks, either internal or as third party plug-ins, including Keras, Turi, Caffe, scikit-learn, LibSVN, and XGBoost frameworks. Apple has also made this package open source and modular for easy adaption for other frameworks or by yourself. The process of importing the model is illustrated in this diagram: In addition; there are frameworks with tighter integration with Core ML that handle generating the Core ML model such as Turi Create, IBM Watson Services for Core ML, and Create ML.
