2018 A year of creepy AF smart home headlines

first_img See All Google’s efforts were impressive, but Duplex didn’t sit right with all of us. “In this age of disinformation, where fake news thrives and the public has trust issues with technology, Google designed a machine that can deceive humans,” wrote CNET’s Bridget Carey, who also voiced concerns over the fact that Google’s Assistant never identified itself as a robot. “Gosh, what could go wrong?”Two days after that editorial, Google told CNET explicitly that it will launch Duplex with “disclosure built-in” for better transparency. An Amazon Key in-home delivery: not as creepy as we expected! Tyler Lizenby/CNET Then there’s Amazon Key, which looks to leverage smart lock tech at your front door to let delivery people drop Amazon packages off inside your home. The Amazon Key Home Kit even includes an Amazon Cloud Cam to let you watch the delivery in real time right from your phone (more on cameras in just a bit, by the way). The idea of granting a stranger authorized access to your home was unnerving for many of us — but in the end, Amazon Key wasn’t nearly as creepy as we expected. In fact, the most we ever saw of the delivery people was an arm reaching inside the cracked door to drop a package off just inside. From Megan Wollerton’s recap:”While I started out hesitant about in-home delivery, I’d be comfortable enough to use it going forward (and to recommend it to frequent Amazon customers) — as long as I can keep an eye on whoever’s delivering the packages from my phone.”Camera creep2018 might be the year when the mainstream smart home opened its eyes, with a flood of new camera-equipped products and services designed to help us keep watch over our homes or stay in touch with loved ones. Early in the year, for instance, Amazon bought the home security startup Ring and its popular video doorbell. Now, a new app for Ring users called Neighbors lets you share, view and comment on local crime activity, complete with video clips from Ring cameras and doorbells in your community. The Nest Hello video doorbell is one of a growing number of smart home products using cameras equipped with facial-recognition technology. Chris Monroe/CNET That’s an appealing pitch to some, but consider the company’s recent patent applications focused on facial recognition. Each considers ways to use Ring cameras to identify “suspicious” people (convicted felons, sex offenders, etc.), then automatically alert law enforcement. That raised fresh surveillance state concerns from the American Civil Liberties Union.”Amazon is dreaming of a dangerous future,” the ACLU’s Jacob Snow said in a statement, “with its technology at the center of a massive decentralized surveillance network, running real-time facial recognition on members of the public using cameras installed in people’s doorbells.”We expect to see more uses of facial recognition technology in the coming year, including from cameras that are already equipped with the feature, like Google’s Nest Hello video doorbell. In other words, don’t expect this issue to fade from sight. And it’s not just the front door — from night-vision security cameras to connected baby monitors, people are parking cameras inside their homes, too. Doing so might require you to wrap your head around some potential privacy vulnerabilities. For instance, earlier this year, researchers from Kaspersky Lab warned that hackers could turn your own cameras against you by spying on you, or by fooling you with a duplicate, “cloned” feed. Your next vacation rental might have security cameras inside, too, which raises concerns about whether or not you could be filmed without realizing it during a weekend getaway.  That brings us to smart displays, a new smart home category that promises to bring even more cameras into people’s kitchens and living rooms. Amazon was first into the space with the Echo Show and Echo Spot, and Google soon followed suit with a suite of its own Google Assistant-powered touchscreens, including the Lenovo Smart Display and the JBL Link View. Tellingly, Google opted not to include a camera in its flagship, first-party smart display, the Google Home Hub.Of course, there’s another smart display worth mentioning. In fact, it gets the next section of this post all to itself.fl-portal-10 Chris Monroe/CNET Smart home hubris from FacebookThere was a collective “you’ve gotta be f***ing kidding me” from many of us who write about tech when Facebook, in the midst of scandal after scandal after scandal over the misuse of user data, unveiled the new Facebook Portal in-home video chatting devices. Because sure, why not let a transparency-challenged company that’s been — at best — wildly irresponsible with user data bring person-tracking cameras and always-listening microphones into your living room? They promise they’ll behave! Tags CNET Smart Home Aug 31 • The best coffee grinders you can buy right now More recently, a judge in New Hampshire ordered Amazon to hand over the Alexa audio of a user accused of two counts of first degree murder. For now, Amazon is fighting the ruling.”Amazon will not release customer information without a valid and binding legal demand properly served on us,” an Amazon spokesperson told CNET. “Amazon objects to overbroad or otherwise inappropriate demands as a matter of course.”   Concerns about silent, “ultrasonic” audio attacks also raised our collective assistant anxiety this year, with researchers claiming that the most popular voice platforms were vulnerable to audio cues at frequencies too high for humans to hear. Researchers at UC Berkeley claim they were even able to fool Mozilla’s open-source DeepSpeech voice-to-text engine by hiding ultrasonic audio cues within brief snippets of music.Maybe most disconcerting — to date, none of the major tech companies responsible for these voice platforms have denied that attacks like these are possible.google-duplex-orens-hummus-demo-2-2Enlarge ImageWith Google Duplex, Google Assistant will call restaurants and salons to make reservations on your behalf. Google’s demo was one of the most convincingly life-like AI use-cases we’d ever seen. James Martin/CNET Big moonshots, big questions2018 saw some notable new ideas about where smart home tech may be headed — and some of those ideas raised a lot of questions.Let’s start with Google Duplex, the search giant’s effort to let the artificially intelligent Google Assistant make phone calls on your behalf. Google touted the feature as a way for the Assistant to book things like haircuts and dinner reservations — and the demo was pretty mind-blowing. Google Assistant will leave you guessing And hey, amid escalating scrutiny, perhaps they will. “We have a responsibility to protect your data,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a March 21 statement following the company’s Cambridge Analytica data-mining scandal. “And if we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you.”Just keep in mind that since then, Zuckerberg’s company has come under continued fire for not doing enough to deal with a flood of fake news and Russian trolls on its platform during the 2016 US election. In July of this year, the company admitted to sharing user information with hardware and software partners even after claiming to discontinue the practice in 2015. Just this week, the New York Times reported that Facebook used “special arrangements” like those even more than the company initially disclosed — namely, to give Microsoft’s Bing search engine access to the names of all Facebook users’ friends without consent, and to allow Netflix and Spotify to read Facebook users’ private messages.Netflix denies that it ever accessed people’s private messages on Facebook, or asked for the ability to do so. Spotify didn’t immediately return a request for comment. At any rate, we are well past the point of taking Facebook’s word for anything when it comes to protecting your private data. But, if early market indications showing lots of interest in smart displays this holiday buying season are correct, that’s exactly what some people might be doing. That, or they’ve been drawn in by Facebook’s admittedly slick user interface — enough so to shrug off some extremely valid privacy concerns. After the year we’ve had, maybe that’s what creeps me out the most. reading • 2018: A year of creepy AF smart home headlines Microphone mishaps (no laughing matter)Things typically get a bit quiet in tech during the months following January’s big CES expo in Las Vegas. This year, a mysterious and disconcerting bout of laughter echoed out of the silence. The cackle in question came from Alexa, when users of Amazon’s popular voice assistant began sharing clips of eerie, unprompted laughter emitting from their Echo devices. Once the phenomenon began to trend on Twitter, Amazon confirmed the issue and told us it was looking into a fix.2018 saw a number of stories about Echo devices acting strangely. Chris Monroe/CNET “In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase ‘Alexa, laugh,'” the company ultimately explained. “We are changing that phrase to be ‘Alexa, can you laugh?’ which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance ‘Alexa, laugh.’ We are also changing Alexa’s response from simply laughter to ‘Sure, I can laugh’ followed by laughter.”In another Alexa headache this May, a family in Oregon claimed that their Echo device recorded audio of a private conversation and sent it out to a random contact without warning. Amazon’s explanation? It was the Alexa equivalent of a butt-dial.”[The] Echo woke up due to a word in background conversation sounding like ‘Alexa,'” an Amazon spokesperson told CNET. “Then, the subsequent conversation was heard as a ‘send message’ request. At which point, Alexa said out loud, ‘To whom?’ At which point, the background conversation was interpreted as a name in the customer’s contact list. Alexa then asked out loud, ‘[contact name], right?’ Alexa then interpreted background conversation as ‘right.'””As unlikely as this string of events is, we are evaluating options to make this case even less likely,” Amazon added.Still, accidents happen. Just today, Reuters reports that Amazon mistakenly sent the wrong files to an Alexa user in Germany who had requested his Echo recordings. As a result, he was able to download and access 1,700 recordings from another user’s household. Per Reuters, Amazon called this an isolated incident, and the result of human error.Assistant anxietyAmazon also found itself navigating potential legal battles over user privacy when Alexa became an apparent witness to not one, but two separate cases of homicide. The first came to a conclusion in March when Amazon agreed to hand over the Alexa audio recordings of a user in Bentonville, Arkansas, who stood accused of of first-degree murder, but only after that user consented to the release. Aug 31 • Alexa can tell you if someone breaks into your house 2018 is just about over, and it’s common for tech reporters to dig back into their beats to try and sum up the year’s news. And, as the CNET Smart Home team took a look back for our own year in review, there was one takeaway we just couldn’t escape:The smart home was… kinda creepy this year.To wit, there were evil cackles from Alexa, fake phone calls from Google Assistant, and concerns a-plenty about the connected cameras and microphones filling our homes. That’s not to mention the well-founded fears about the mass amount of data that these devices are asking to be trusted with (looking right at you, Facebook Portal. No thanks.)So, yeah, if the smart home had you a bit creeped out in 2018, I can’t say I blame you. Here’s a look back at the stories that probably played a role. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan gives away fears of BJP winning seats in

first_img Close That would have been a happy outcome for the party. It ‘s always nice to see your cattle fatten themselves on the neighbour’s field while your own sickle (and hammer) hangs lazily from the eave. All eyes will be on Thiruvananthapuram and Pathanamthitta on May 23. Will BJP win these two seats and manage to push the CPM or the Congress to the third position in a couple of other seats? If that happens, the backlash would be complete for the Left. The flicker of anger in Pinarayi’s eyes is portentous!(The author is Managing Editor, International Business Times, India. Views are personal) BJP national president Amit Shah joins Jana Raksha Yatra in TrivandrumTwitter@BJP4IndiaKerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan once again treated media persons like dregs. When a journalist asked him about the voter turnout in Wednesday’s polling, the CM shouted him down saying ‘keep away from here’. Why the CM was upset with a question on high voter turnout in Kerala is a no-brainer though. For, the increased polling percentage is the crux of the post-poll analysis in Kerala now.Kerala saw 77.68 percent voting, the highest in 30 years in the Lok Sabha elections. It was nearly 4 percentage points higher than the 2014 turnout of 74 percent. Historically, the Left Front Vijayan leads has suffered badly each time the voter turnout was higher than 75 percent.A UDF upper hand in Kerala in this elections has been factored in, even by the CPI-M cadres. Realistically the party insiders don’t hope to win the 2014 tally of eight seats. Winning as many would be a great win for CPI-M under the circumstances. Therefore, the CM’s angry reaction does signal that the prognosis is worse. For the Left, what’s worse than a UDF landslide is the possibility of BJP winning a few seats in Kerala. The CPI-M kept the BJP at bay for long, paying a heavy price in the process. In 2014 LS elections, the Left front flipped its own cadre votes to the Congress candidate in Thiruvananthapuram in order to keep BJP out of the electoral sweepstakes in the state. That’s a ‘sacrifice’ the Left has done many a time in the past. The barrage breaching? However, it looks like CPI-M and Pinarayi Vijayan fear that this barrage may have been breached this time. What does a BJP win in any of the Kerala seats mean? First and foremost, a BJP win will mean the rejection of the whole political argument the Left built up through the various phases of the Sabarimala agitation. In a worst case scenario, what if the BJP wins a couple of seats and manages to come to an even keel with the Left’s tally? That would be more than a momentary loss of face. The CPI-M will have to re-imagine its voter base. For long it was backed up the majority Hindu demographics. But if BJP has successfully poached into that turf, what’s the Left left with? The UDF has always been a ‘minority front’ that enjoys the support of the sizeable Muslim and Christian population in the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is addressing a public rally in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir on April 14.The CPI-M loves to believe that, in fighting BJP violently, it’s keeping a fascist party at bay. There’s a narcissistic streak in the party. It loves itself too much to fatally ignore its own fascist stripes. It feigns to be the bulwark against fascism, but ends up as the most fearsome proponent of the politics of bloodshed. All in the name of secularism! What makes the CPI-M hate BJP so violently? Ideology? Yes of course, it’s there. But more than that, the Left sees in the rear view mirror another ‘Hindu party’ racing fast and catching up with them. Shorn of lofty ideologies, it’s a dog fight for the turf and an attractive voter base. This election is a crucial touchstone.A ‘secular’ consolidation that didn’t happen?Sure, the Left in Kerala will not be washed out if the BJP wins an LS seat in Kerala. A couple of seats for the BJP in a spreadsheet dominated by the Left would have been brushed aside happily. Rather it could have been interpreted as the demise of the Congress in Kerala. But what if the Congress-led UDF wins a lion’s share of the seats and the Left and BJP end up with a couple of seats each? That will be the most unpalatable scenario for the party and a daunting challenge for it to deal with in future. It’s not clear if that will happen in Kerala. But Vijayan’s angry outburst betrays some misgivings.CPI-M’s tactical positioning in Sabarimala was dictated by the demands of realpolitik. It was a given that BJP, the national ruling party, was on the ascendancy in Kerala. By taking a stand against faith and conventions in Sabarimala, the Left wanted to create a straight-laced secular Vs communal paradigm. They figured out that while all that’s theirs would remain theirs, all that’s Congress’s would also become theirs. Smugglers Offer Crammed Big Rigs As VIP Treatment To US

first_imgAP Photo/Eric GayFrom the photo archive: A man holds a candle during a vigil at San Fernando Cathedral for victims who died as a result of being transported in a tractor-trailer, Sunday, July 23, 2017, in San Antonio. Several people died after being crammed into a sweltering tractor-trailer found parked outside a Walmart in the midsummer Texas heat, authorities said Sunday in what they described as an immigrant-smuggling attempt gone wrong. When Thomas Homan, the acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was awakened Sunday morning with news that migrants were found dead inside a sweltering tractor-trailer outside a San Antonio Walmart, his mind flashed back to 2003, when he stood at the back of a truck about 120 miles (200 kilometers) southeast of San Antonio that carried 19 dead migrants.  “It is sad that 14 years later people are still being smuggled in tractor-trailers,” he said. “There still isn’t water, there still isn’t ventilation. These criminal organizations, they’re all about making money.” The striking similarities of the Texas tragedies demonstrate how smugglers have found a durable business model carrying large groups — often in big rigs — through an elaborate network of foot guides, safe house operators and drivers. A criminal complaint about Sunday’s discovery that 10 were dead and dozens injured in the truck opens a window on their degree of sophistication and organizational muscle: passengers had color-coded tape to split into smaller groups; and six black SUVs awaited them at one transit point to bring them to their destinations. Big rigs emerged as a popular smuggling method in the early 1990s amid a surge in U.S. border enforcement in San Diego and El Paso, Texas, which were then the busiest corridors for illegal crossings. Before that, people paid small fees to mom-and-pop operators to get them across a largely unguarded border. As crossing became exponentially more difficult after the 2001 terror strikes in the U.S., migrants were led through more dangerous terrain and paid thousands of dollars more. Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, a political scientist who teaches at University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley, said migrants she interviewed last year in South Texas paid $2,000 to $3,000 more to ride in the crammed tractor-trailers, considering them more effective, faster and safer than walking through the desert to a pickup point far from the border. Hundreds of border crossers perish each year in the desert, getting lost and dehydrated in extreme heat. The growing use of trucks coincided with increased trade with Mexico under the North American Free Trade Agreement, allowing smugglers to more easily blend in with cargo, particularly on Interstate 35 from Laredo, Texas, to San Antonio, Correa-Cabrera said. Walking in the open desert more easily exposes them to U.S. Border Patrol agents. Women, some carrying children, think they are less likely to be raped on a truck than in the open desert because there are more witnesses, Correia-Cabrera said. Riding in a big rig, she said, is “the VIP treatment.” For smugglers, the advantage of tractor-trailers boils down to scale. “It’s like any other business: the more they move, the more profit they make,” Homan said. “Rather than taking four in a car, the profit margin on tractor-trailers is a lot more.” Alan Bersin, a former federal prosecutor who was President Bill Clinton’s “border czar” and a high-ranking Homeland Security official under President Barack Obama, said immigrant smugglers have taken a cue from groups that bring drugs from Mexico to the United States and guns and cash from drug sales to Mexico from the United States. They break into small groups or loads to get across the border, lessening the chances of getting caught by inspectors and minimizing losses if they are discovered. Once they clear the border, they regroup. Truck drivers are low-level cogs in a big machine, recruited in the U.S. at casinos and other places where smuggling organizations look for people who are down on their luck, desperate for quick cash and disinclined to ask questions. James Matthew Bradley Jr., who made an initial court appearance Monday in San Antonio on smuggling charges, told authorities he was delivering what he thought was a sold vehicle from Schaller, Iowa, to Brownsville, Texas, and that he didn’t know what was inside, according to the complaint. He said he was given no deadline or address to deliver the truck. Other guides take migrants across Mexico by bus. Others join them on a raft across the Rio Grande or through the desert to a hideout or to a nearby house where they may wait days or weeks. Eventually smuggling organizations get them to major cities like Phoenix, Houston or San Antonio. “I have to imagine that their winning percentage is really, really high,” said Adam Isacson of the Washington Office on Latin America, a human rights advocacy group. “Whatever reputation they lose from episodes like this, their profit margins are still high enough to make it work. Otherwise people wouldn’t pay.” ___ This story has been corrected to show that the truck began its journey in Schaller, Iowa, not Schiller. Sharelast_img read more

Bid goodbye to dry skin

first_imgBid adieu to dry skin during the pre-winter season by opting for creamy products and oiling your body right, says an expert. Beauty expert Bharti Taneja, of the capital-based Alps Beauty Clinic, has shared some pre-winter beauty tips for making your skin look and feel soft. Opt for creamy products: Pack away those gel-based face washes, creams as well as make-up products and opt for creamy ones. Cream-based products are generally oil-based and hence form a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture during chilly days. These creams deeply moisturise the skin while nourishing it from within.  Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Use sunscreen: Most of us restrict the usage of sunscreens only for summer to protect the skin from tanning and stop using it as soon as the autumn arrives. But not many know that pre-winter sun too can be harmful for the skin. Therefore, it is advisable to apply broad spectrum sunscreen with UV and PA+++ protection in winter on your face and other exposed parts of the body. For better protection, make sure you apply the sun protection cream 30 minutes before stepping out of the house.  Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixOil the body: The importance of oiling your body becomes inevitable as the autumn breeze may rob it of its natural moisture as soon as the fall season starts. A 10-minute oiling session before your bath would suffice for the nourishment needs of the skin. Performing this on regular basis is sure to keep your skin soft, supple and smooth throughout the winter season. Conditioner: To keep the lustre of the hair intact, it is good to use a conditioner which has silicon to lock down the outer circle layer and seal in the moisture. You may also try a homemade avocado mask for dry and rough hair. For this, mash the flesh of avocado with fork and add extra virgin olive oil to make a mixture. Apply this smooth mixture and wash it off after 30 minutes. This nourishing mask is enriched with essential vitamins, minerals and softening agents for your hair to fight pre-winter harshness with ease.Hydrate: Boost your beauty regimen by drinking lots of water irrespective of the season. It helps your skin stay young and hydrated by flushing out all the toxins of your body. If you are not very happy with the idea of gulping down the cold water, make sure to drink lots of warm or lukewarm water during the day.last_img read more

It is my privilege to be associated with such a noble cause. This production is an adaptation of the internationally acclaimed film and Broadway musical. It is a story of four women who live life on their own terms and make their own choices which are sometimes right, sometimes wrong, but more importantly, they are the ones controlling their lives. While the foot-tapping music is certainly the soul of the production, the story, I believe is equally interesting,” says director Ritu R Chandra, who has crafted the new-age act with immense passion. Over a career in theatre spanning for 18 years, Chandra has scripted, produced and directed various plays, including The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and We will Rock You. Her latest production was the critically acclaimed Khushi Ek Ehsas for the Blind Relief Association featuring 50 visually impaired children on stage. Azad Foundation’s and Sakha’s ‘Women on Wheels’ is a social initiative that gives resource-poor women an opportunity to earn a livelihood through dignity. Azad Foundation provides transformational training providing driving as well as self-empowerment modules such as self-defence, first aid, legal and women’s rights, to name a few, to prepare and empower women. Once the women successfully complete the training, Sakha Consulting, Azad’s sister concern, provides employment to them in private chauffeur placements and Sakha Cabs for Women.  “Our ‘Women on Wheels’ program has recently brought remarkable change to the lives of many women and given vulnerable women living in slums a chance to escape poverty. Not only has it provided them much needed support, but has empowered them financially and socially in every aspect of life. The cohort of women chauffeurs provides safe and alternative transport options to women in Delhi and other cities, contributing in their own little way to make India safer, equitable and more amenable to women. We are thankful to Ritu Chandra and her team of artists for coming out in support of our cause and helping us in raising funds to expand our endeavour,” says Meenu Vadera of  Azad Foundation.‘Women on Wheels’ has so far trained as many as 700 women as employable drivers.
