first_img Share UWF Women’s Basketball Drops Exhibition Game to South Alabama 51-45 Nov. 4, 2007MOBILE, Ala. – The West Florida women’s basketball team led the Jaguars 45-44 with 2:27 to play, but a quick five points in a 25 second span was the difference in the contest. Neither team had a lead of greater than three points, except for two brief five point Argonaut leads at 26-21 and again at 36-31 midway thru the second half. South Alabama never had a lead of three points or more until Shakira Nettles hit a three pointer to put the Jaguars up by 49-45, with just over one minute left in the game.In an evenly matched game, the lead changed hands 11 times. West Florida out-rebounded the Jaguars by a 48-42 margin, while both teams had nearly identical shooting percentages. UWF Guard Chelsea Patterson (Fr. / Largo, Fla.) led all players with 23 points, while Guard Jeanette Tucker and Point Guard Siedah Banks led the Jaguars with 11 each. Argo Forward Tara Russ (Sr. / Lake Park, Fla.) had a game high 10 rebounds, to go along with one blocked shot and one steal.West Florida opened up with a basket from Point Guard Tiffany Scott (Sr. / Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and Guard Karmeshia Easley (Sr. / Mobile, Ala.) to take a 4-2 lead early on. Midway thru the first half, Center Caitlin Salak (So. / Mattoon, Ill.) scored on back to back baskets, that sandwiched a basket by Banks of South Alabama, and the Argos were up 17-16. With the score tied at 19 late in the first half, Patterson drove to the basket for a leaning lay-up with 10 seconds left in the first half to give the Argos a two point halftime lead.West Florida kept a slim lead for the first ten minutes of the second half, before a Jessica Sparling jumper put South Alabama up 38-37. The Argos Laura Davis (Sr. / Spanish Fort, Ala.) followed with a three pointer to put UWF up 40-38. Then after three lead changes, Patterson hit a jumper to put the Argos up 45-44 with 2:27 to play. It would end up as the last basket for West Florida, as the Jaguars got a fast break lay-up and the big three pointer from Nettles to take a 49-45 lead. Two late free throws were tacked on to make the final score 51-45.Scott and Davis both had five points, while Easley, Salak, and Dominique Boykins (So. / Houston, Tex.) each added four points. Samantha Schlaegel (Sr. / Port Huron, Mich.) pulled down six rebounds for West Florida. The Argos will begin the regular season at home in their “Tip-off Classic Tournament” on November 16th against Florida Southern College. The game is at 6:00 pm in the UWF Fieldhouse.
