first_img Read Full Story The rapidly emerging diabetes epidemic in Asia has the potential to overwhelm health care systems, undermine economic growth, and inflict unprecedented levels of disability on the world’s most populous continent. A new website—the Asian Diabetes Prevention Initiative—aims to put a stop to this deadly epidemic by offering Asian countries authoritative, science-based information to stop the spread of type 2 diabetes. The website—www.asiandiabetesprevention.org—a joint initiative between the Department of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH) at the National University of Singapore (NUS), gives the public, health professionals, and public health practitioners quick and easy access to information about the causes of type 2 diabetes, its dire consequences, and what can and must be done to decrease the prevalence of this disease in Asia.“Asia has become the epicenter of the global diabetes epidemic,” says Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at HSPH and co-editorial director of the new website. “By providing the latest advances in research on epidemiology and state-of-the-art practices for diabetes prevention through lifestyle and environmental changes, this website will raise the public’s awareness about this ‘silent’ epidemic and spur urgent actions to address it.”last_img read more

Santos secures Noble rig for Dorado appraisal campaign

first_imgAustralia’s Santos has secured a drilling rig for its Dorado appraisal campaign located in WA-437-P offshore Australia scheduled to start in April next year. For illustration: A Noble Corp.-owned jack-up rig. Source: Flickr; Author: SP MacThe joint venture partners in exploration permit WA-437-P are Carnarvon with a 20% interest and Santos, the operator, with an 80% interest.Carnarvon said on Tuesday that the shallow water depths mean that the joint venture can utilize a cost-effective jack-up drilling rig for its Dorado appraisal wells and that it had secured the Noble Tom Prosser jack-up rig for the wells. The Noble Tom Prosser was also used to drill the Roc-1 discovery in this area in 2016.Two wellsThe 2019 drilling program is expected to include two Dorado appraisal wells that will focus on gaining further information on the volume of oil, gas and condensate discovered in the Dorado-1 well to build proved reserves which will underpin the Dorado development.Carnarvon said that the drilling of the first well is scheduled to start around April 2019.The wells will also focus on determining the flow properties of those hydrocarbons from the reservoirs intersected in order to optimize the Dorado development and obtaining additional data at different locations within the Dorado field.Carnarvon Managing Director, Adrian Cook, said: “The incredible Dorado discovery earlier this year means we are highly motivated to appraise the oil, gas and condensate within the structure. The objective in 2019 is to enhance our understanding of the volume of the resources recoverable and move to making a Final Investment Decision for development ideally in 2020.”The Noble Corporation-owned jack-up Noble Tom Prosser recently finished the Bayu Undan infill well program for ConocoPhillips in the Timor Sea. The drilling program consisted of two platform wells and one subsea well connecting into existing offshore infrastructure.last_img read more

Monk eyeing further progress

first_img Monk has managed to keep key players like skipper Ashley Williams, striker Bafetimbi Gomis and goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, the latter signing a new four-year deal on Thursday amid reported interest from Serie A giants Roma. He also did his summer transfer business early with international forwards Andre Ayew and Eder, France Under-21 defender Franck Tabanou and Sweden goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt integrated into the Swansea squad at the start of pre-season. “We’ve had good preparation time with the group, they’ve put a lot of hard work in on both the physical and football side of things,” Monk said. “The group were together very early and the new signings were here early as part of our plan. “It’s an advantage because we’ve had five or six weeks with the whole group while other clubs are still looking to bring in players. “We got to a good level last year with the expectations of how I want them to work but now it’s about improving tactically, physically, technically – and that’s what we’ve been working on. “We have sat down and shown them how much they have improved and how much they can improve. “We have showcased situations on the pitch when it’s been negative and they’ve not dealt with it properly, then – after work with them to put it right – how they dealt with it properly and how it becomes second nature. “That’s how we are trying to improve, how to attack stronger and quicker, keep the ball better, how we defend certain areas of the pitch.” Monk has had no joy against Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho in the past, losing every one of their three previous meetings with the most recent being a 5-0 thrashing at the Liberty Stadium in January. “We conceded nine against them last year, which wasn’t good enough at all,” Monk said. “There weren’t many times I could say I was gutted with a performance but the one at home was one of them. “But Jose is tactically one of the best managers in the league. “He’s very clever in his approach, his team is so adaptable in playing different ways and brilliant to watch. “They’ve set the standard for everyone and when I come up against Jose I know I’m in for an interesting afternoon.” Monk has valid reason to curse his side’s start away to champions Chelsea on Saturday evening – “I don’t think the fixture computer likes us very much,” – as 12 months ago Swansea started their campaign at Manchester United. But Swansea spoiled Louis van Gaal’s Old Trafford bow that day by winning 2-1 and, while many observers feel Monk has his work cut out to repeat last term’s eighth-placed finish and 56-point haul, the 36-year-old feels the current squad is in a healthy place. Press Association Garry Monk feels Swansea are in good shape to build on last season’s best Premier League finish and record points total.last_img read more
