Tottenham in talks with FA over hosting Champions League matches at Wembley

first_img Wembley hosted the Champions League final in 2013 Tottenham are talking to the Football Association over the possibility of using Wembley Stadium to host their Champions League matches next season.Entry into Europe’s elite knockout competition hasn’t been confirmed yet, but with just four games to go, it looks highly likely they’ll be back in next season’s competition after a five-year absence.Spurs are re-developing White Hart Lane and are facing the prospect of playing matches in front of greatly-reduced crowds with the Paxton Road End facing demolition – capacity could temporarily drop as low as 28,000.The club are already in negotiations over moving to the national stadium for a season until the new 61,000-capacity ground is completed and now want an option for their European matches next term. The FA will have to consider if these matches clashes with pre-existing events, but adding a number of matches to the calendar shouldn’t cause any problems with local councillors. The number of 90,000 full capacity events are limited to 37 per year by Brent Council, but there is no limit placed on the amount of events restricted to 50,000 spectators – where the top tier is shut.North London rivals Arsenal played their Champions League games for two years at the old Wembley Stadium, during the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons. 1last_img read more
