While AB de Villiers called it quits last year, Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn also retired in the lead up to the upcoming Test series.Without the big names, South Africa will start as underdogs against Virat Kohli’s men who are bidding to win their 11th successive home series. However, left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj talks up the talent in the side and says South Africa are certainly arrived to compete and not going to back down.”They (Amla and Steyn) are two greats of the game. I think in terms of the depth in our squad, we do have players who will fulfill the role,” Keshav Maharaj said.”I think Temba Bavuma has taken the responsibility with that and has shown that in the practice game. Obviously, Lungi has come through as a world class bowler along with Vernon (Philander) and KG (Rabada),” Maharaj added.”So as much as it would be a big loss in terms of the records that they possessed to the party, we do have season campaigners in domestic cricket and have fairly enough international experience to fill in those boots.”New faces bring new energy: MaharajadvertisementNotably, South Africa were beaten 3-0 in a 4-match Test series the last time they toured India. The touring side were exposed against Indian spinners who rain riot, shooting out the Proteas for low scores throughout the series. It will be difficult for South Africa once again but the performances of some of their young talents, including Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma and Kagiso Rabada will give a lot of confidence to captain Faf du Plessis.Notably, Markram has been in fine form, hitting hundreds for South Africa A and South Africa (against Board President’s XI). The visitors will also take confidence from the way they came back from behind to square the T20I series last month.”People talk about freshness and if you look at our squad, it’s a helluva lot of new faces from the last time and that could work in our favour in terms of the brand of cricket we could play and the positivity,” Maharaj said.”Yes, it may not go our way but we here to compete. We’re not going to lie down and back down with the sort of our woes from the last tour. Like I said, with new faces it brings along new energy.”And who knows? It could be our time over the next three Tests matches to sort of shock some people.”South Africa and India will play the first Test of the 3-match series in Visakhapatnam from October 2.Also Read | Jasprit Bumrah to consult 3 doctors in UK for lower back stress fracture injuryAlso Read | Big Bash League: Brisbane Heat sign AB de Villiers Also See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
